Benzoyl peroxide (BPO) is an organic peroxide with the chemical formula C14H10O4, usually a white crystalline powder with a bitter almond odor. It is a strong oxidant, commonly used in flour whitening, oxidant and polymerization initiator.
The chemical formula of benzoyl peroxide is C14H10O4 and the structural formula is (C6H5−C(=O)O−)2, usually abbreviated as (BzO). It is a white granular solid that is hard to soluble in water, but soluble in acetone, ethanol and many other organic solvents. Benzoyl peroxide has strong oxidation properties and can react with a variety of substances.
Flour Whitening : In flour processing, benzoyl peroxide can oxidize pigments in the flour to make the flour look whiter.
Chemical reaction : In polymerization reaction, benzoyl peroxide can be used as an initiator to initiate the polymerization of monomer molecules and form polymers.
Medical Field : Benzoyl peroxide is also used to treat acne vulgaris, achieving therapeutic effects by killing bacteria.
